About Nico Lopez

Nico Lopez is a Nashville-based fashion/costume designer and wardrobe stylist. In 2020 she relocated to her new home city from Los Angeles after working there for 8 years.

As a self-taught artist, she first learned to sew by de- and reconstructing vintage pieces found at antique stores and thrifts in high school and organic creations evolved from there. She began to take her sewing seriously once musicians and artists began to request custom pieces for events, performances, and videos.  Motivated by the positive feedback these designs received she launched her own line in 2007 that was presented for the first time publicly at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in collaboration with a Martin Munkacsi retrospective.

After the overwhelming response to her presentation at the MOMA she expanded her line into jewelry as well. As an early adopter of sustainably focused practices that are finally reaching mass acceptance today, Nico felt that creating beautiful and unique pieces could still be luxurious while also being eco-conscious. After years of selling at most of the Bay Area’s best boutiques and expanding to Los Angeles, being featured in many magazines such as Nylon, Lucky, EcoLuxe, and SF Weekly and garnering attention from celebrities, stylists, and some of her favorite modern artists.

In 2012 she moved to Los Angeles from San Francisco and transitioned into the world of styling and wardrobe design primarily while still creating custom pieces for private clients. She worked on projects in film, editorial, music videos, e-commerce, and commercials full time working with clients such as Vanity Fair, Chrysler, Nissan, Bat for Lashes, Ketch Secor (OCMS), Maroon 5, The Dandy Warhols, Jim McGuire, Disney, JASH and many more.

While living in Nashville in 2014/15 Nico had the privilege to work with and study under the famed designer and master tailor, Manuel Cuevas, one of her all-time creative heroes. The work she did with him while also creating custom suits for private clients for tours, music videos, and performances, The Grammy Awards, etc is what she continues to dedicate her creative energy to most passionately. She strongly believes in continuing to sharpen her education by pushing herself to learn the creative traditions that can only be passed on by the masters of their crafts having studied with Manuel, attending the shoe-making course at Bonney and Wills in Ashland, corset making at Morua in Chicago and hatmaking under Leslie Robinson in Santa Monica.

Please see the main portfolio pages to see examples of her own work as well as a few examples of work she has assisted on in the past. The stills include many examples of her original designs, feel free to inquire about custom pieces!

One of the biggest inspirations for Nico is the individual clients she works with whether it be refining their personal style and image or creating custom designs from the ground up for tours, performances, or engagements.  Each individual brings new excitement to the job and having the work be personal and different for each job is what keeps the work most interesting to her. Nico loves to travel and is happy to do so to work with clients around the world and to travel continuously for the right jobs.
